Univer Product LTD is one of the leading food seasoning and other food manufacturing companies in Hungary. Univer’s product portfolio can be found in nearly every household. Our core products are mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup products, and pepper-based food seasonings such as Piros Arany (Red Gold), Erős Pista (Strong Steve) and Gulyáskrém (Goulash Paste). Furthermore, we are the leading tomato concentrate manufacturer in Central-Europe, where we produce high-quality, but generic tomato concentrates mostly for industrial exports. Over the past decades, the pepper and tomato-based food products became the unquestionable classics of Hungarian cuisine. As a stable market leader, we are determined to offer modern food products to the international market and revitalize domestic sales.

Challenge

Breaking out from a generic, industrial tomato concentrate producer position and the renewal of an undisputedly successful, but aging product portfolio is quite a challenge. Due to the change in consumer preferences and values, classical food products can become obsolete which can lead to a decreasing profitability level. Univer is looking for the next generation of its classical pepper and tomato-based food portfolio with the following criteria:

1) The goal is to implement an international survey on consumer habits regarding healthy nutrition and emerging product categories, which fit the international trends (silver food, baby food, out of home consumption, easy to use products, long shelf life, etc.) in context with pepper and tomato component food products. The preferred target regions are the EU, Great Britain, Near East and Far East countries including Japan.

2) Based on the results, proposing product development ideas, which shall be:
a) Export-oriented product categories, supported by emerging trends of existing products.
b) Products are suitable for healthy lifestyles and are in accordance with the recognized consumer trends.
c) Taking the “Hungarian dilemma” into consideration: should the new products have a Hungarian character/brand on the international market?
